History of

Shri Lakshmi Venkataramana Temple

The ancient era witnessed the flourishing of religious practices and spiritual principles, with temples serving as centers of knowledge and culture. Temples, being the primary places of worship, are sacred abodes of ultimate grace and happiness.

Shri Lakshmi Venkataramana Temple, Harikhandige, is one of the oldest temples where devotees from surrounding villages gather in large numbers to receive the grace of Shri Lakshmi Venkataramana Devu.

The annual celebrations of Kartika Purnima, Bhajana Mangalostava, Rathostava, and Nompi, along with other festivals, are held at the temple. These events attract a large number of devotees from far and wide. The temple follows the Madhwa Vaishnava tradition established by Sri Madhwacharya (Srimad Ananda Tirtha), wherein Shri Vishnu is regarded as the Supreme Being of the Universe. Shri Venkataramana, one of the incarnations of Shri Vishnu, is worshiped as the presiding deity of the temple.

The temple’s history dates back to the 15th century, making it one of the oldest Venkataramana temples in Harikhandige, with a history spanning over five centuries. In the year 2014-2015, during the "Jayanama Samvatsara," the temple celebrated the Prathishta Pancha Shatamanotsava in a grand and memorable way throughout the year. Now, the temple is nearing its 510th year since its Prathishta. In 1928, during the Vibhava Nama Samvatsara (on May 28, 1928), the Punar Pratishtha (re-installation) of the deities was performed.

In 2012, 80 padayatris undertook the Rama Dandu Padayatra to Tirumala in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Rama Danadu Padyatra, which was first conducted in 1912.

The village, located between the Western Ghats and the sea, is surrounded by evergreen forests and rivers. Most of the Bhajakas (devotees) in the area are primarily agriculturists even now. From its inception, there have been seven Gotra families worshipping as Ista Devatas: Atri, Kaundinya, Vatsa, Kounsa, Vasishta, Bharadvaja, and Gautama Gotras.
